Meet Petey, the puppy who was left to die in a park with his brother because he was different.
While walking her son home from school, a woman from Sacramento, California, noticed the dogs and rushed them to the vet. They were hungry, sluggish, and as cold as ice. Petey’s brother died shortly after arriving at the clinic, but Petey decided to fight for his life.
The puppy’s inability to move properly alerted the veterinarians to the fact that something was wrong. Petey was discovered to have cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition in which the cerebellum is not fully developed.
“This can occur due to genetic causes or infections in the mother during development,” Dr. Laurie Siperstein-Cook, a veterinarian at the Sacramento SPCA, told The Dodo. “The signs include head bobbing, clumsiness and falling.”
Petey, on the other hand, is still a playful dog: “He’s rambunctious, curious, and silly,” said Westphal-Thomson, Petey’s foster mom. “He’s also extremely self-assured and enjoys meeting new people…”
He learned to eat on his own and enjoys cuddling and running around. The abandoned puppy was quickly adopted by a loving couple who adore him and will never abandon him because he is unique.
