An elderly pregnant Labrador retriever who arrived unresponsive within the back of a pickup on Saturday to the Boone Area Humane Society in Iowa is slowly making progress towards her recovery.

Unfortunately, all 21 puppies she carried died – the last surviving puppy lost the fight on Monday.

According to the Boone Area Humane Society, the dog gave birth twenty-four hours before surrendering to the shelter.

She was immediately transferred to Iowa Medical University for advanced care.

She quickly gave birth to two puppies; one was stillborn, and therefore the other died moments later…

“Today we are posing for your help to save a lot of this poor r mom-to-be… Delivered to us this morning gave birth and shows signs of septic shock. We took her to ISU College of Vet Med, where she is currently receiving treatment. Veterinarians tell us that there are several puppies inside that still have strong heartbeats, but this mom is in a very serious condition and requires an urgent C-section to save a lot of puppies and mom. They believe she’s been parturient for over 24 hours now.¨

As you can imagine, the cost of an ambulance and a C-section is extremely expensive, between $ 5,000 and $ 8,000. We would be very grateful for any amount you donate today to help her. you will donate here in this post or on our website https://bahs.us/donate/.

An investigation into how the dog was left to suffer is underway at this time, more details will share later. But we believe that she deserves the opportunity and together with your help, mom and her cubs  will get that!! ”, – The organization posted on their page on social networks.

The eight-year-old dog had an emergency C-section and coded twice after surgery, however veterinarians were ready to stabilize her.

She needed a transfusion of packaged red blood cells and plasma.

She has had multiple litters within the past and will are enjoying retirement now due to her age instead of someone continuing to breed her.

Immediately after 21 premature puppies were born, only 12 survived and received a transfusion of maternal antibodies hoping to give them a chance at life.

Two days later, despite the best care and efforts of the staff, the last puppy died. His survival was extended, but everyone hoped for a miracle….

The good news is that the mother dog is doing better. She is still weak, but today she got up and went outside! they are starting to wean her off painkillers and fluids, plus her bloodwork looks good too.

The Boone Animal Humane Society says it’ll do what it can to file charges against whoever they believe is liable for allowing the older dog to urge pregnant.

They know who owns the dog, but so far they are not releasing any details. Unfortunately, Iowa has very “Weak animal protection laws, it’s always a tough battle”….
